2012 Classics Challenge

This will be my third and final 2012 reading challenge (after my own 2012 TBR Pile Challenge and the E-Book Challenge hosted by Reflections of a Book Addict).  This one is hosted by Katherine at November’s Autumn. This challenge requires participants to be a little more interactive, by checking in every month to fill out some questions about the classics we’re reading (like a blog hop), which is the big draw for me.

In total, participants need to pick 7 books (3 can be re-reads but none of mine will be).

Here are the books I chose:
  • Notre-Dame de Paris (The Hunchback of Notre-Dame) by Victor Hugo
  • The Symposium by Plato
  • Middlemarch by George Eliot
  • Our Mutual Friend by Charles Dickens
  • The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
  • Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
  • The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins

My Progress: 2 out of 7 Complete

  1. Sounds like fun! I may join in on this..I just reviewed a bio of Dickens, drop by to take a look. There will be at least one Dickens on my list!

  2. I have read all the books on your list, except the last one, but I stopped being an ardent fan of the classics when I finished college, I am more into postmodernist literature, so I will pass this challenge, I am already involved in five, which now seems a bit too much :) I only have one classic on my list for next year, and that is Dostoyevsky’s The Gambler!

  3. Gone With the Wind!!!! And also…

    Gone With the Wind!!!
    :)

I’m also reading Middlemarch, Hunchback and The Woman in White next year. Good times.

    1. Wow! We’re in sync this year! haha

  4. I always have grand ideas of reading a classic a month, so far I’ve always failed. I did manage to finally read Pride and Prejudice (loved it) and A Room with a View (also liked). I attemtped Jane Eyre and Anna Karenina and failed miserably. Good luck on your challenge! I’ve never read any on your list.

  5. For me The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas andThe Woman in White by Wilkie Collins.

  7. “Gone With the Wind” will make your heart explode with joy AND sorrow AND confetti. So you better like it.

I’m reading “The Woman in White” next year, too! It looks verrrry creepy in the most delightful way.

  8. Though I will admit to being a little intimidated, I also hope to read Plato in 2012 -either the book you mentioned or The Republic.

    1. Have you read any Plato? If not – don’t be intimidated. He’s very interesting, and if you snag a good translation, you won’t have any trouble. His “Five Dialogues” is my favorite work thus far, but I’m looking forward to The Symposium!

      1. No, I’ve never read Plato. I just have this preconceived, yet unfounded, notion of difficulty. I’ve added “Five Dialogues” to my reading list. Thanks.

  9. Good choices! I’ve joined this challenge, too, as I’d like to work more classics into my reading diet in 2012. Good luck to ya!

  10. The first book on our list is the same. I did want to include Middlemarch, but I managed to scare myself because it took me three attempts to finally read The Mill on the Floss…
    Good luck!
