World Book Night: I’m A Giver!

Disclaimer: This post will be filled with much Squeeness.

Excerpt from an E-mail I received moments ago:

“Dear World Book Night book giver,

Yes, you read that right: World Book Night book giver! Has a nice ring to it, yes? And you’re one of them, or will be on April 23! Thank you!!!!!!!”

SQUEE!!

(See – I told you)

About a month ago, I applied to be a book giver for World Book Night: America.  So, what is World Book Night?  Well, why not let the project speak for itself:

Welcome to World Book Night

We need book-loving volunteers to fan out across America on April 23, 2012! Just take 20 free copies of a book to a location in your community, and you just might change someone’s life. Please sign up by Feb. 6 EST at midnight.

The goal is to give books to new readers, to encourage reading, to share your passion for a great book. The entire publishing, bookstore, library, author, printing, and paper community is behind this effort with donated services and time.

The first World Book Night was held in the UK last year, and it was such a big success that it’s spreading around the world! Please volunteer to be a book giver in the U.S. Sign up now to be a book giver.

Did you catch that?  They’ve extended the deadline for applications!  If you’re a book blogger, librarian, author, reader, or other general book lover, and you live in the United States – get your metaphorical bum over to the World Book Night website and sign-up!  What could be more fun then spending a night handing out FREE books to new readers?!

There was an outstanding selection of 30 books to choose from – I do not know yet which book I’ll be giving out to the public, but I know that I’ll be happy with any of my first three choices (and, based on the information in the e-mail – almost everyone should get their second choice, if not the first).

There aren’t enough SQUEEs in the world to demonstrate how excited I am about this event.  I was uber-jealous of my U.K. book blogging friends who were able to participate last year.  This year, it’s me & my pals – and I plan to be Tweeting updates and pictures all night.  CANNOT WAIT!

  1. Congratulations Adam!! That is wonderful! :-)

    1. Thanks! I’m excited – hoping to maybe find another couple bloggers who are participating locally so we can join forces and offer up a selection of books, rather than just the one title. We’ll see…

      1. It think this is such a wonderful thing they do. I wish I had gotten into reading more when I was younger. I can’t imagine not having books in my life now, but I know I’ve missed out on so many wonderful ones getting into it later in life. This is a great way to spread the love of books & reading! :-)

      2. I wasn’t much of a reader when I was young, either. I read a few good books here and there – but it wasn’t until late in High School that I really discovered reading, and then fully dove in when I was in college. And, clichéd as this might sound, it was Harry Potter that opened the floodgates.

      3. I’m sad to admit it took until my 30′s to get fully into reading. In my 20′s, it was maybe a couple a year, now it’s 1-3 book a week! And hey, people of all ages love the Harry Potter books. I still need to read those myself. One day… :-)

  2. As a UK based giver from last year (48 Cloud Atlases) & have signed on again. Great to have you with us. I won’t wish that you’ll enjoy yourself as that’s a foregone conclusion but will tweet & bog in tandem with you.

    1. Wow – 48 books! I think we’re getting 20 this year. I’m definitely looking forward to it – now I just need to go get approval for the spot where I want to set up.

      1. I found bribery works, I gave the management a box of cookies & one of them was a recipient of my first copy…http://parrishlantern.blogspot.com/2011/03/world-book-night.html

      2. Haha – Well, I know the manager of the coffee shop I plan to set-up in front of (and I spend a ton of money there), so it should be okay.

  3. Yay, World Book Night! I’m a giver, too, and since I didn’t pick The Hunger Games as my first choice, I’m assuming that I’ll be good with Wintergirls for my after-school program location. Where will you be giving out books?

    1. I’m probably going to be giving books out at a Starbucks outside of a large shopping mall – I don’t anticipate it will take me too long to get through the 20 bokos. Lol

  4. That’s completely awesome!!!! Now, I did think about doing this. But am unsure where to do it. So, I didn’t apply. Where do you plan on doing it?

    Mary

  5. Yay! Congrats! I just got my e-mail too. :) I want to know what book I’m handing out! (I didn’t pick Hunger Games, so I am hoping it is my first choice!)

    1. I didn’t pick The Hunger Games either – I think my first choice might have been The Things They Carried – but I can’t really remember. haha

      1. I picked that one as my third choice. :) Good taste, you!

      2. Haha – Well, obviously.

  6. Awesome!

I wish I could participate in World Book Night. Sadly, it doesn’t seem to be open to Canadians yet, at least to be givers. Hopefully next year I can do it!

Have fun with spreading the good words!

  7. Congratulations! :-D I loved World Book Night last year in the UK, not only for the books but also for the book related TV happening for the surrounding weeks! It was brilliant, and I love that the US are doing it too this year. Secretly I like your list of books better than ours, but I think that’s just cos I’ve read a lot of the UK ones already…

  8. Great news! I can’t wait to see your pics and tweets!

  9. I’m a giver too! I’m not sure which book I’ll be getting, but I plan on passing them out at a local coffee shop. What’s better than coffee and books?!

    1. That’s exactly what I’ll be doing!

  10. Hello:

Congratulations!!! I’m a giver too and I’m extremely happy. I just read my email.

    Jess @ jessysbookends.blogspot.com

    1. Excellent!! Isn’t it exciting??

  11. Congrats Adam!! So pumped for you!

  12. This is exciting! I’m going to check it out now, see if I can apply. :)

  13. Congratulations! I am a giver too, and will be getting my girls to go with me. I have an 11 yr old reluctant reader and I hope this will help turn her around…

    1. I took my ten year old daughter last year & she loved it & we both hope to be picked again this year.

  14. I got my email too!! I can’t wait to find out what my book will be. My first choice was The Book Thief, I think my second choice was The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. The Hunger Games was my third choice so I doubt they’ll give me that one.

I’ll probably hand out my books at an outdoor shopping mall nearby. It has a movie theater and a very busy Starbucks, so it should be a good spot. And the empty shell of a now-defunct Borders :-( .

I look forward to reading your posts as it gets nearer. I’ll have to sign up for Twitter so I can follow on WBN.

  15. Thanks for the heads up on this awesomeness! Jen and I signed up…we’ll see if we get approved. :)

    1. Awesome! Good luck!!

  17. I am a giver as well! I’m SO excited! This is going to be fun!

    1. Yes! Which book(s) are you hoping for??

  18. I’m a World Book Night giver too! I forgot about it for a while, well it was in the back of my mind, then I just remembered that the email said to expect an email from them the week of February 13th so i’ve been OCD with my email. =D
